Some people have expressed interest in what I think the server needs to get it into the modern era, so I figured I'd post it here. If you have suggestions feel free to share with your reasoning. I may also choose different parts entirely when the time comes to pull the trigger, these are simply the pieces I liked at the time I was looking.
Note: I'm posting Newegg links out of convenience. If it's cheaper elsewhere, I'll get it elsewhere
Solo Parts
These are the items that I can buy without worrying about the other parts in the system.
[Purchased] Case

The old case was basically a cage considering how much was missing, and none of the LED or buttons worked. The new case is much better as staying cool, and has filters to keep the interior dust free.
[Purchased] SSD

There are two ways to go here. Get a smaller SSD and place only the Operating System + Software on it, leaving the current HDD for data, or get a larger SSD and have the HDD as a mirror for backup purposes. The server doesn't use a lot of storage in all honesty. The real concern is read and write speeds, and the SSD has a ton of that.
[Purchased] Power Supply

The current PSU is the original. 230 Glorious Watts of passively cooled, un-certified action. New hardware runs more efficiently than ever, but it also requires updated standards, and the current GPU doesn't cut it. A new GPU would also provide more SATA power connectors (the current has just 2), allowing for more storage expansion.
Tightly Coupled Parts
These parts rely on one another. Simply put, none of them are compatible with the current, archaic parts. This means that if one is replaced, they must all be replaced.
Motherboard

The board I selected is feature packed and capable of pretty much any reasonable Intel CPU we could want. With a Memory cap of 32 GB, We could host hundreds of players (bandwidth allowing of course).
Processor

A high-end i5 or a low-end i7. Doesn't really matter. I would prefer an unlocked CPU (denoted by the K at the end of the model number) as a bit of extra future proofing. An aftermarket cooler would be required before any overclocking was done, of course, and the already purchased case supports 240mm Radiators for water cooling. Minecraft is surprisingly multi-threaded, so 8 logical cores is quite an advantage over our 4 physical, and modern command sets will really help reduce cycle times to accomplish basic commands.
Memory

Not much to say here. It's faster, that's for sure. Currently we're sitting at 12 GB (2 x 4 GB, 2 x 2 GB), but I see no reason in buying sticks any smaller than the slot can take, so 2 x 8 GB minimum it is. 4 x 8 GB for 32 GB total would be preferred, but can be seen as a stretch goal if the server is still doing great when we finally get to that.
