Well, if you're running windows. There's a folder called .minecraft someweres in the Users folder. Delete it and Minecraft essentially ceases to be. Granted, all saves, settings, mods, maps and whatever you have is gone, so back important stuff up first. Seriously, it was probably just corrupt java files that were messing me up, but I did both just to be sure.
And yes, after I deleted the original minecraft singleplayer world I'd been working on for 7 years, I realized how stupid what I'd done was.
