There are two ways to go here. Get a smaller SSD and place only the Operating System + Software on it, leaving the current HDD for data, or get a larger SSD and have the HDD as a mirror for backup purposes. The server doesn't use a lot of storage in all honesty. The real concern is read and write speeds, and the SSD has a ton of that.
The current PSU is the original. 230 Glorious Watts of passively cooled, un-certified action. New hardware runs more efficiently than ever, but it also requires updated standards, and the current GPU doesn't cut it. A new GPU would also provide more SATA power connectors (the current has just 2), allowing for more storage expansion.
A high-end i5 or a low-end i7. Doesn't really matter. I would prefer an unlocked CPU (denoted by the K at the end of the model number) as a bit of extra future proofing. An aftermarket cooler would be required before any overclocking was done, of course, and the already purchased case supports 240mm Radiators for water cooling. Minecraft is surprisingly multi-threaded, so 8 logical cores is quite an advantage over our 4 physical, and modern command sets will really help reduce cycle times to accomplish basic commands.
Not much to say here. It's faster, that's for sure. Currently we're sitting at 12 GB (2 x 4 GB, 2 x 2 GB), but I see no reason in buying sticks any smaller than the slot can take, so 2 x 8 GB minimum it is. 4 x 8 GB for 32 GB total would be preferred, but can be seen as a stretch goal if the server is still doing great when we finally get to that.

You may have noticed the Donation button pop up on the side bar of the forums, as well as an ad at the bottom of the page. I just wanted to discuss what purpose each of them serves for the sake of transparency.

The Ads help offset the costs Blue2000 pays to maintain the website and our domain name, which is under his ownership. We are doing our best to keep ad sparse and unobtrusive and are always open to feedback concerning their content and placement.

Donations on the other hand are used on upgrades to the server. I run the server from home, right next to my own computer, as I have since the days of Alpha. This means I don't pay rental fees, just the cost of powering the server and the bandwidth it uses. These costs are small enough that it's not worth isolating them, and so I consider part of my regular bills.

On the other hand, running from home also means I don't get access to whatever latest hardware those same rental companies are using. In fact, the hardware this server is running on is quite dated. That's not to say it isn't capable, only that we've hit a wall in which we can't expand beyond without significant cost. I'd like to continue upgrading the server, and in fact have already started with the purchase of a new case. Most of the parts though are strongly coupled, and replacing one means replacing them all. In the past some players have donated to help offset the cost of those upgrades. In adding the donation button, we am allowing players to continue helping. I want to be clear in that I am not asking for help. The server upgrades are going to occur regardless of what donations are made. I am simply making the option available for those who want to. There are no rewards, and there is no risk of the server going down because not enough people donated. I've been hosting this server for years, and as long as someone is logging on, I will continue to host it. Donate only because you think we're providing the best Minecraft Server we possibly can. If you disagree with that statement, hold onto your money.

So how many of you have found it frustrating when a Minecraft update came out and you updated it just find out that you could no longer play on a multiplayer server you liked because the multiplayer server was not updated? Are you still having these frustrations? Here is one very simple way I was taught to get around this. I apologize if this is well known information or if you already know it, but I thought I'd just make a post incase some people had/have these frustrations like I did.

Open the Minecraft launcher. This launcher should portray three tabs selectable at the top (Update Notes, Launcher Log, and Profile Editor). At the bottom of the launcher, there should be a bar with the following: A profile-selection drop-down menu with "New Profile" and "Edit Profile" buttons under it, a "PLAY" button in the middle, and a message to the right stating your selected profile and the Minecraft version you are ready to play all with the "Switch User" button underneath.

Click the "Edit Profile" button. The location of this button is at the bottom left of the launcher. The location is identified more in Step 1.

Find the "Use version:" drop-down menu under the "Version Selection" section. There are three sections in the Profile Editor: "Profile Info," "Version Selection," and "Java Settings (Advanced)." "Version Selection" should be the middle section, and, under this section, you should see "Use version:" followed by a drop-down menu.

Open the "Use version:" drop-down menu and select the Minecraft version you want to play. Within the "Use version:" drop-down menu, there should be several selections of Minecraft versions at their release to choose from as well as the "Use Latest Version" option.

Click the "Save Profile" button in the very bottom right corner and press the "PLAY" button when it takes you back to the Minecraft launcher.

The unfortunate thing about this is that I believe you have to redownload the version you select. For example, if I updated my game to 1.8 and I used the method in this discussion to play with the 1.7.10 version, I'm pretty sure I would have to redownload the 1.7.10 after I press "PLAY" in Step 5. After you redownload it though, I think you can switch between the versions with ease. For me, I can switch between the last couple versions in what seems to be a few seconds.

I hope this helps a lot! I should be able to answer questions, but please forgive me if I take a while to get back to you!
